Painting a Room is Expensive

by Kristi on September 6, 2010

If you watch DIY shows like me, then you know how they always say that painting a room is a “cheap” way to freshen up a space. Well, it may freshen it up, but it isn’t “cheap.”

Recently, we redecorated our master bedroom. The the last step in the process is painting. While I had anticipated the labor that would be involved, I didn’t factor in how much it really costs to paint a room.

When factoring in the painting, you can’t just think about the price of the paint. You also will need the following:

  • Paint brushes
  • Roller
  • Paint Tray/ liner
  • Drop Cloths
  • Painters Tape
  • Edger
  • Paint thinner (to clean the brushes so we can use them again)

It all adds up.  When it was all said & done, we dropped about $75 just to paint one room!

While I did spent what I consider a lot on this project, I was able to  save a little money by doing the following:

  • Bought the paint on sale ($5/Gallon rebate)
  • Purchased 3pk of brushes (that I will clean to reuse later)
  • Purchased the Rollers, Refills, & Paint Tray as a set

I’d love to hear some of the ways you have found to save money when painting a  room!

Some places have marked down paint because someone ordered it and decided it wasn’t what they wanted. If you’re wanting a particular color, just keep your eyes open because it will show up eventually. That’s what we did with our bedroom. The color is only slightly darker than the color we wanted and after we painted it, it was lighter on the walls so it’s almost exact. Also, I am a good thrift store shopper, if you have something in mind you will find it eventually. You just have to be patient. Such as for valances, etc. I got two really pretty valances for our bedroom for $5 apiece. So paint and valances cost $25.

Yes! Always check the shelve of the harware store where they have the clearanced already tinted paint! They will even try to adjust the color for you if you ask… I found one gallon on the shelve that I loved and was going to paint our bedroom with it but instead my boyfriend made a great surprise for his father and stepmother and painted their bathroom from a crazy gross shade of hunter green to a relaxing tan and white (his father was on vacation out of the country and his stem mother was at work) :) It was a GREAT present/surprise for them and only cost $6 for that gallon, we already had the white. It made both of us feel great to help them out and update their bathroom and looks great too :)
